Candle Care

Why trim wicks to ¼"?
Keeping candle wicks trimmed to ¼" keeps your candles burning best. It reduces smoking and achieves a more even burn. Tapers and tealights are self-trimming and do not require trimming.

Why snuff out candles?
To prevent smoke, it is better to snuff a candle than blow it out. Our “amazing” wick snuffer is the best way to snuff the wick without any smoke.

Why use a votive holder?
When votives are burned in a proper votive holder, you will get the maximum burn time because the wax completely burns away. Our votives will burn up to 15 hours and completely liquefy when burned in a properly sized votive holder.

What is a self-consuming pillar?
A self-consuming pillar is one that burns completely. The center and sides burn together and the candle melts down evenly. It’s important that the first burn be no longer than 2-3 hours and that the wick is trimmed to ¼". This will keep the liquid wax from getting too close to the outer edge and spilling over.

Are tapers smokeless & dripless?
Not all tapers are smokeless and dripless, but well designed tapers, like ours, are smokeless and dripless when burned properly. Always burn your tapers away from drafts, fans and air conditioners because even the best tapers in the world may drip in a draft.

What makes a Premium Candle?
The finest wicks, waxes and fragrances are joined together in a balanced combination to make a premium candle. This blending of ingredients affects burn quality, fragrance throw and aesthetics.

How important is the Wick?
Wick size, diameter and quality affect the way a candle burns. The perfect wick produces a full-shaped flame and good burning characteristics. Proper materials and sizing along with premium wax will eliminate soot and smoke. Our wicks are made from 100% cotton.

How important is Wax Quality?
Wax is the fuel of a candle and affects its burn quality and appearance. There are hundreds of waxes to choose from when designing a candle. Color is affected by the wax and the wax is affected by the color. Each candle we make contains a combination of waxes to achieve the great burning qualities we are looking for.

How important is Fragrance Quality?
A fine fragrance can make a big difference in the experience and pleasure you get from a candle. Candle fragrances are normally put into three categories: good, better, best. Northern Lights at Home takes great pride in putting only the very “best” and most natural fragrances in our candles.
